When to Worry About Varicose Veins: 4 Symptoms to Take Seriously

Varicose veins are a common condition, affecting up to 35% of Americans. They’re often pegged as a cosmetic concern, but these engorged veins can also cause aches, cramping, and a sensation of heaviness. While they aren’t life-threatening, certain symptoms could indicate a more serious underlying problem.

If you’re tired of your varicose veins, don’t hesitate to visit Vascular Specialists, located in the greater Chicagoland area at three convenient locations in Illinois and northwestern Indiana. Here, our team of board-certified, fellowship-trained vascular surgeons describe four symptoms to take seriously when it comes to varicose veins.

1. Pain and discomfort

While some people experience no symptoms at all with smaller spider veins, those who have larger and more twisted varicose veins may experience pain and discomfort in the affected area. Severe pain can also be a sign of an underlying issue such as inflammation or blood clots.

If your pain is persistent or severe, it's important to seek medical attention to rule out any serious conditions. You might suspect a blood clot if the area is also red, swollen, and warm to the touch.

2. Swelling

Swelling around the affected area is another symptom to take seriously. This could be a sign that the vein isn’t functioning properly and is allowing fluid to build up in the surrounding tissues.

If you notice swelling, especially if it's accompanied by pain or redness, see a doctor. Swelling can be associated with many conditions, including blood clots, lymphedema, and edema.

3. Changes in skin color or texture

Varicose veins can cause changes in the skin around the affected area. This could include skin that appears reddish or brownish in color or skin that feels rough or itchy. These changes could be a sign of inflammation, venous ulcers, or skin damage, and you should have our team evaluate.

4. Bleeding

In rare cases, varicose veins can bleed. This is usually the result of a ruptured vein, and it can be quite serious if left untreated. If you experience bleeding from a varicose vein, seek medical attention immediately.

The bottom line: While varicose veins are generally harmless, it's important to pay attention to any symptoms that could indicate a more serious underlying issue. If you experience pain, swelling, changes in skin color or texture, or bleeding, seek medical attention. With proper treatment, you can manage your symptoms and prevent any serious complications.
